Simon McBurney
artistic director

McBurney was born in Cambridge, England. His father, Charles Brian Montagu McBurney, was an American archaeologist and academic. McBurney studied English Literature at Cambridge University and then trained for the theatre at the Jacques Lecoq Institute in Paris.

McBurney is co-founder and Artistic Director of Complicite with whom he has devised, directed and acted in over 30 productions including The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in New York with Al Pacino in the title role. As an actor he has performed extensively for theatre, radio, film and TV. Feature films include Sleepy Hollow, Kafka, and most recently The Last King of Scotland, Fra Pavel in The Golden Compass, and Fox in the upcoming The Duchess. He also wrote the story and was an executive producer for Mr Bean's Holiday.

He was awarded a 1998 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Theatre Choreographer of the 1997 season for The Caucasian Chalk Circle. He was nominated for the Sydney Edwards Award for Best Director at the 2003 London Evening Standard Theatre Awards for The Elephant Vanishes performed at the Barbican Theatre. He was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the order of the British Empire) in the 2005 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to drama.
